5 Days, 5 Ways: How to Wear Gingham Without Looking Like a Tablecloth

ESC, 5 Ways 5 Days Red LipIn fashion, oftentimes there's a very fine line between being on-trend and looking like a ‘50s tablecloth. When it comes to one of this season's biggest trends—gingham—that line (of patterned squares) can be even harder to discern.
Luckily, the celebs have been about town in full gingham prints that are a fashion-forward step above the twee-looking rest. Here's how to wear the square pattern five different ways—without looking like a piece of Americana decor, a throwback housewife or you're sittin' comfy home on the range.

Gingham has a tendency to live in the style realms of either the proper schoolgirl or casual cowboy. But complement the geometrical pattern with a loud, graphic print, like Victoria Justice did with this cropped sweater, and you'll bring the prim vibe down to the streets.

There was never an oversize vest a style savant like Sarah Jessica Parker didn't like. But add a big-block printed iteration over a fancy silk dress, and you have an ensemble that looks both casual-chic and far more interesting than those ladylike A-line belted gingham dresses of yore.

One of the ways this square print quickly ventures into cowboy territory is when it's complemented with a neutral or denim pairing. Instead, do as Kate Upton did and contrast the gingham lines with a bold floral print.

Surprisingly, gingham works as a perfect base or neutral. Just like with graphic or floral prints, the square pattern can take a solid backseat to more intricate or bold details. Here, Kendall Jenner rocks a DVF frock with an intricate lace overlay. The checkered backdrop takes the textured detail to the next level.

On Fridays, life should be easy. Throw on a coordinating two-piece and you're ready for whatever the night takes you. OK, so Zendaya is sporting more plaid lines than gingham, but baring just a sliver of skin with a short top and high-waisted bottom brings the look into this decade. Here's an added bonus: You can dissect this look and wear the pieces separately on Saturday and Sunday for two additional new looks.
