Refresh: How To Update Your Skincare Routine

teewhy-hive.blogspot.co.uk
Now that winter’s snow and biting cold is (finally!) a thing of the past, it’s time to change up your skincare routine to reflect warmer, sunnier days ahead. Slightly higher temps mean a slightly different regimen, one that focuses less on intensive hydration and more on sun protection and nourishing your complexion.

“When the temperature increases, trans epidermal water loss becomes rapid and the skin barrier needs to be protected properly, avoiding the heavier products that were used during cold weather days to protect the lipid barrier function,” explains Biba de Sousa, celebrity aesthetician with clients including Emily Blunt, Michelle Monaghan, and Allison Brie, adding, “I recommend SPF year round, but it’s particularly important when it heats up.”
From moisturizer to cleanser to SPF, we’ve found the best ways to update your skincare routine for spring.
CLEANSER
The kind of super creamy, uber-hydrating cleanser that’s perfect for winter isn’t as necessary in spring. Instead, try a soap-free, gel-based cleanser that will help gently remove dirt and oils without stripping your skin.
TRY:
Image Skincare Ormedic Balancing Facial Cleanser ($21)
Simple Micellar Facial Gel Wash ($6)

MOISTURIZER
While you might need something intense and occlusive in a harsher, wintery climate, once spring has sprung, you can focus on lighter formulations that still hydrate without going overboard, like water-based or hyaluronic acid moisturizers.
TRY:
Neutrogena Hydro-Boost Gel Cream ($20)
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 ($7)

EXFOLIATION
Winter’s build-up of rougher, drier skin means that your dull complexion will likely need a good boost of bottled glow. Opt for a chemical exfoliator; it isn’t as harsh as a grainy manual one, can be used only a couple times per week (less is more!), and is a fast track to a smooth, even complexion.
TRY:
Drunk Elephant Sukari Babyfacial ($80)
Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 8% AHA Gel Exfoliant ($29)

SPF
The single most important thing you can do for your skin is investing in a good sunscreen and applying it faithfully every morning. It will assist in preventing future damage (more likely now that the sun is finally peeking through the clouds!) and will also help ensure your existing actives can do their skin-beautifying job. Opt for a lightweight but protection-packed SPF with a hint of color and you’ve got yourself a spring tinted moisturizer.
TRY:
It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream with SPF 50 ($38)
Maybelline New York Dream Fresh BB 8-In-1 Skin Perfector Sunscreen SPF 30 ($9)

Sephora (US) $38.00
